Icebreaker by Hannah Grace Review

Okay so, unpopular opinion, but let’s KEEP giving spicy reads these cutesy cartoon covers because boy oh boy did that make me feel a little more confident as I was reading this at my place of work. 😂

To quote the novel, "You're reading porn in public? You're disgraceful!"

Hehe.

Icebreaker was a hot and humorous ride, not only showcasing the dynamic between eventual lovers figure skater Anastasia and hockey player Nate, but also between the entire Maple Hills hockey team. Grace's characterization and humorous writing differentiated this novel from other romantic comedies.

One of the things I thought this book did well with was the exploration between the other relationships of the two main characters. With Anastasia, we get a good look at her relationship with her skating partner, while with Nate we explore the dynamic of his hockey team. Often in romance novels I feel like we are zoomed in so far in on the main characters that all side characters become pointless. As someone who values characterization as one of the most important things in storytelling, I really appreciated the lengths Hannah Grace went to provide each of the side characters with personalities, opinions, and stories. (Any Henry fans? I absolutely LOVED HIM!) I am also really excited to read more of this series, which explores the different tales of the hockey team members.

As someone who will always be obsessed with the found family trope, this book satisfied that part of me really well! I loved how the hockey team looked out for each other. Hannah Grace REALLY popped off with that!

AND THE SPICE. Someone had told me that this book was spicy, but I hadn’t realized that it would be that spicy THAT QUICK!

But in full seriousness, the spice scenes in this novel were very well written! There were a few that I felt weren't necessarily needed, as I got a little tired of it by the end of the novel.

Was it the healthiest relationship? Absolutely not. Was everything perfect? No. But was it everything I wanted in a fun romance book with super hot scenes? ABSOLUTELY!

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised with this novel! I felt like it was a tad too long for what it was. There were a few scenes that I felt dragged on a bit, and some interactions were not necessary for the novel. The novel was around 400 pages, which is a lot for a romantic comedy. However, despite some scenes dragging a bit, other scenes helped carry the interest, making it an overall pleasant read! I cannot wait to read the next two books in this series, Wildfire (Maple Hills #2) and Daydream (Maple Hills #3).

Until then, go read another chapter everyone! See you soon!
